The Science of Balance

How Acupuncture Works

HOW ACUPUNCTURE WORKS

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. The needles create a controlled local stimulus that can activate sensory nerves and influence signalling within the nervous system. Research suggests that acupuncture may affect processes involved in pain perception, muscle activity, circulation and the regulation of stress responses.

At a local level, controlled needling can stimulate the body's natural tissue-repair processes. In the skin, this may involve increased local circulation and activity within fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen and other components of connective tissue. This is one of the mechanisms being explored in cosmetic acupuncture and skin rejuvenation.

Traditional Chinese medicine offers a different but complementary way of understanding acupuncture. Points are located along interconnected channels, traditionally described as pathways through which Qi flows and which have relationships with different regions and internal organ systems. Point selection is therefore not always limited to the area where a symptom is felt. Points elsewhere on the body may be selected according to the individual pattern identified during assessment.

At By Yolly, these traditional principles are considered alongside modern clinical understanding. Your treatment is tailored to your symptoms, health history and goals, with point selection designed to provide an individualised approach to your physical health, wellbeing and, where appropriate, facial and skin concerns.

Philosophy

Nurse Yolly aims to take a whole-person approach to health and well-being, recognising that the body, mind and overall experience of health are deeply connected.

Our practice brings together the clinical knowledge of Western medicine with the traditional principles of Chinese medicine, a system developed and refined through thousands of years of observation and practice. We draw from both perspectives to create an approach that is thoughtful, individual and grounded in what is appropriate for you.

Every person is different. Your symptoms, health history, lifestyle, goals and overall wellbeing are considered when we explore the most suitable approach.

For us, holistic care does not mean choosing between Western and Eastern medicine. It means being open to what each can offer, while keeping clinical judgement, safety and the individual at the centre of your care.

FAQ

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a clinical practice that involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the nervous system and promote physical wellbeing and balance.

Does the treatment hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine—much thinner than medical needles—so the sensation is minimal. Most patients experience a sense of relaxation rather than discomfort during the session.

How many sessions will I need?

Treatment frequency varies based on individual health goals and concerns. Typically, a course consists of 4 to 6 sessions, with the practitioner providing a clear plan during your initial consultation.

Is acupuncture safe?

When performed by a qualified healthcare professional like Nurse Yolly, acupuncture is extremely safe. We use single-use, sterile needles and follow high clinical standards for every treatment environment.
